A bad blower motor can leave a house without cooling even when the outdoor section still looks intact. On this Perry rental call, that was the problem, and the unit was pretty old.
Age matters because a repair can put cold air back for a while, but it may not address the rest of a system that is already near the end of its useful life.
We gave the customer a price to try and fix the issues that were going on, and we also gave a price to replace the unit. Putting both options in writing makes the tradeoffs easier to see: a shorter term repair versus a full replacement with a clearer path forward for the tenant.
Photos of the old cabinet, including the model and serial markings, helped document what we were pricing.
In this case the customer chose replacement, and we installed a new unit the very next day. That kept the tenant from going without air for an extended period of time.
